My mornings used to start with the usual rush — breakfast, backpack, shoes, out the door. Then I started adding one thing: a minute of speaking God's Word over my child before they left.
At first it felt awkward. My child looked at me sideways. But over weeks, something shifted — in them, and in me. The declarations became an anchor. A ritual of faith that said: whatever the day holds, you are covered.
The biblical foundation
Deuteronomy 6 is sometimes called the Shema — the most central command in the Jewish faith. God told parents to take His words and impress them on their children. Talk about them when you sit at home, when you walk along the road, when you lie down, and when you get up.
This wasn't a suggestion about Sunday school attendance. It was a call to weave the Word into the fabric of daily family life — including spoken over your children.
“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children.”
Deuteronomy 6:6–7
What speaking scripture over your child actually does
When we declare scripture over our children, a few things happen:
- ✦It aligns our own hearts with what God says about them — not what the world says, not what a bad report says
- ✦It releases faith — spoken words carry weight (Proverbs 18:21)
- ✦It builds a spiritual atmosphere in your home
- ✦Over time, children internalize what they hear repeated. Speaking truth shapes the voice in their head
- ✦It's an act of intercession — you're agreeing with God's Word on their behalf
How to start: keep it simple
You don't need a theology degree or a long liturgy. Here's a simple framework to begin:
Morning (30 seconds): Place your hand on their shoulder and speak 1–2 declarations. Something like: "You are taught by the Lord and great is your peace — Isaiah 54:13. God goes before you today."
Bedtime (1 minute): After lights out, speak a declaration of protection over them while they rest: "He commands His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways — Psalm 91:11. You are kept."
That's it. Two touchpoints. Consistency matters more than length.
Declarations to start with
Here are a handful of personalized declarations you can speak over your child by name today:
- ✦"[Name], you are fearfully and wonderfully made — Psalm 139:14. God created you on purpose."
- ✦"All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be [Name's] peace — Isaiah 54:13."
- ✦"God knows the plans He has for [Name] — plans for a future and a hope — Jeremiah 29:11."
- ✦"No weapon formed against [Name] shall prosper — Isaiah 54:17."
- ✦"[Name] grows in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and man — Luke 2:52."
What about when things are hard?
Speaking scripture over your child is most powerful precisely when it's hardest — when they're struggling in school, in a difficult friendship, battling anxiety or self-doubt.
Declarations aren't denial. You're not pretending the problem doesn't exist. You're choosing to agree with what God says about your child louder than you agree with the problem.
That's faith. And it's the most powerful thing a parent can do.
“The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous person accomplishes much.”
James 5:16
